The Australian High Commissioner launches project to protect women’s rights on International Women’s Day
To commemorate the International Women’s Day 2007, the Australian High Commission in Dhaka co-hosted the launch of an Australian Government funded project with the Centre for Women and Children Studies, a leading local NGO.
The High Commissioner Mr Douglas Foskett said that he was particularly pleased to have been able to launch a project specifically aimed at helping women and children, on International Women’s Day.
The objective of the project is to raise the level of awareness of women and children who have been subjected to violence and deprived of their legitimate wage in the shrimp cultivation industry in southern Bangladesh, and to encourage law enforcing agencies and local elected representatives to address the issue. The High Commissioner hoped that the project would help to ensure fair treatment for women and child workers of Satkhira district.
The High Commissioner spoke at the ceremony and highlighted the efforts Australia was making both nationally and internationally to protect the rights of women and children. The program was attended by women from academia, business, media, government and the NGO-sector.
