Australia supports rehabilitation of arsenic threatened people in Jessore

Australian Deputy High Commissioner distributing goats to poor women in Jessore

The Australian Deputy High Commissioner Tim Bolotnikoff visited a project on sustainable rehabilitation of arsenic threatened people in Jessore on Sunday, 29 May. During the visit he distributed goats to extremely poor women from 20 female-headed households of two villages Tengra and Shamta, under Baganchra Union of Sharsha Upazila.

The goat distribution programme was organized by the NGO Society for People’s Action in Change and Equity (SPACE), who work on poverty alleviation, health and nutrition, water sanitation and hygiene, human rights and good governance.

The distribution ceremony was part of a larger project on improving socio-economic status of arsenic affected poor families in Sharsha Upazila. In December SPACE received BDT 17, 95, 500 from the Direct Aid Programme of the Australian High Commission, Dhaka to provide 363 arsenic affected families with safe drinking water, improved cooking stoves, productive toilets, homestead gardens and income generation support such as livestock distribution and setting up vermi-compost plants.
