Bangladesh’s dockyards through the eyes of an Australian photographer

The Australian High commissioner to Bangladesh Dr. Justin Lee inaugurated a week long photo exhibition entitled “The Dockyards” by Australian photographer Yask Desai at the DRIK gallery in Dhanmondi on Thursday 18 March evening.

The exhibition, which received support from the Australian High Commission, is the photographer’s first show in Bangladesh.

Speaking on the occasion the High Commissioner congratulated Yask Desai on capturing the character of the dockyard community, with his photos demonstrating the resilience, endeavour and comradeship of dockyard workers and their families.

Bangladesh, with its port cities and system of inland waterways, retains a close connection with the maritime experience. The dockyard area in Dhaka whilst being the scene of remarkable toil and layered commerce is also a location where people dwell, chat, argue, ponder and relax. Desai captures the characteristics of the Dhaka dockyard in 33 photographs taken in and around that area.

Yask Desai was born in Australia and educated in Australia and India. He currently splits his time between India and Australia working as a photographer and documentary film maker. The exhibition will run at Drik Gallery until 25 March.
