Australia provides Taka 1.1 million assistance for SIDR victims

The Australian High Commission has provided a further Tk 1,100,000 to the Bangladesh Rural Advancement Commission (BRAC) under its Direct Aid Program (DAP) 2007-08, in response to the humanitarian crisis caused by Cyclone Sidr in the southern part of Bangladesh. It will provide emergency food supply to 2000 families in two of the most inaccessible interior areas of Sorankhola and Morelganj at Bagerhat district, one of the most hard-hit areas, and will give special priority to women, children and persons with disabilities.
The Commission funds a number of development projects every year under the DAP scheme in order to alleviate humanitarian hardships. This assistance to BRAC is in addition to Australian Government’s contribution of US $2.7 million for Cyclone Sidr already announced in November.
The Australian High Commissioner, Douglas Foskett, expressed his deep sympathy for the hardships being felt by those in the affected areas. “Australia has always supported Bangladesh during its difficult times”, he said. “This additional assistance is to provide relief to those most affected by Cyclone Sidr.” The High Commissioner handed over a cheque to Mr Aminul Alam, Deputy Executive Director of BRAC, on 10th December 2007.
