Australia and Bangladesh Celebrate 40 years of Diplomatic Relations
The Honourable Foreign Minister Dr Dipu Moni was the Chief Guest at a reception hosted by the Australian High Commissioner to mark Australia Day and the 40th anniversary of Australia-Bangladesh diplomatic relations on 31 January 2012.
The Minister and other distinguished guests were shown a display of historical documents, some never before seen publicly, tracing the history of Australia’s support for Bangladesh’s recognition and for its admission to the United Nations and Commonwealth.
Speaking at the reception, Foreign Minister Dr Dipu Moni drew attention to Australian William Ouderland Bir Pratik who helped with Bangladesh’s liberation struggle and expressed appreciation for Australia’s support to Bangladesh, including through AusAID’s development cooperation program.
Australian High Commissioner Dr Justin Lee also recognised the contributions of Bangladesh’s former High Commissioners to Australia and other individuals from both countries who had strengthened bonds of friendship between the two countries over the past 40 years.
