AUSTRALIA AWARDS ANNOUNCED

Australian Development Scholarship recepients at a ceremony in Dhaka

The Australian Government is pleased to announce that 64 Bangladeshi students have been awarded Australian Development Scholarships to pursue postgraduate studies in Australia commencing in 2012. Fourteen of these students will also receive prestigious Australian Leadership Awards.

The scholarships were presented to Bangladeshis from diverse backgrounds, including civil servants and development workers. Fourteen awards have been given to the small ethnic minority groups across Bangladesh, reflecting Australia’s commitment to provide access to high quality education for these disadvantaged groups.

At a ceremony in Dhaka on 7 December, the Australian High Commissioner Dr Justin Lee congratulated the scholarship recipients on their achievement.

“Australia is committed to continuing our support for human resource development in Bangladesh to promote social and economic development and to further strengthen people-to-people ties between our countries” he said.

The High Commissioner said the scholarships would strengthen Bangladesh’s capacity in key sectors such as education, health, public financial management, public administration, governance and climate change.

The Australian Government has awarded more than 600 scholarships in Bangladesh over the past ten years.

Mr. Asif-uz-Zaman, Joint Chief of the Economic Relations Division, Ministry of Finance also attended, congratulating the awards recipients and expressed his thanks to Australia for its valuable support and cooperation.

Scholarships are funded annually and managed by the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID). For many years, scholarships have formed an important part of Australia’s bilateral aid program for Bangladesh.

The next round of Australia Development Scholarships and Australia Leaderships Awards Scholarships will open from 1 February 2012 until 30 April 2012. Please visit the Australian Awards-Development Awards website: www.australiaawards.gov.au or www.southasiascholarship.org for further information.
