Australia provides funds to protect rights of women garment workers

Australian High Commissioner HE Douglas Foskett is handing over a cheque to BEI President Mr Farooq Sobhan

The Australian High Commissioner, Douglas Foskett, said “Australia is pleased to be able to assist in safeguarding the rights of those working in garment industry in Bangladesh. The contribution of these workers to the export success of the garment industry cannot be underestimated. It is essential that the manufacturers themselves take heed of the workplace standards required by garment buyers in their major markets”.

The Australian High Commission has provided funding to Bangladesh Enterprise Institute (BEI) under its Direct Aid Program (DAP) 2005-06. The funding will be used to develop a National Code of Corporate Social Responsibility to be adopted by the garment factories in order to establish rights of women garment workers in Bangladesh.

The Australian High Commissioner, Douglas Foskett handed over a cheque to Mr Farooq Sobhan, President, Bangladesh Enterprise Institute on 12 April 2006.
